Dal Tadka

Origin & Significance

Dal Tadka is a staple dish in Indian cuisine, originating from North India and widely enjoyed across the country. This flavorful lentil preparation is made with toor dal (split pigeon peas) or a combination of dals, cooked until soft and tempered with aromatic spices, ghee, and garlic. It is a quintessential comfort food, often paired with steamed rice or roti. Dal Tadka is not only delicious but also packed with protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, making it a wholesome meal choice.

For the Tadka (Tempering)

  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)

Step-by-Step Preparation

📌 Step 1: Cooking the Dal

  • Rinse toor dal thoroughly and soak for 15-20 minutes.
  • In a pressure cooker or pot, add soaked dal, 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, salt, and chopped tomatoes.
  • Cook for 3-4 whistles (or until soft). If using a pot, simmer for 30-40 minutes until the dal is tender.
  • Mash the dal slightly to achieve a creamy consistency. Add water if needed to adjust thickness.

📌 Step 2: Preparing the Masala

  • Heat ghee in a pan, add chopped onions, and sauté until golden brown.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  • Stir in coriander powder, cumin powder, and Kashmiri red chili powder.
  • Mix well and let the masala cook for 2 minutes.

📌 Step 3: Tempering the Dal (Tadka)

  • Heat ghee in a small pan for the tempering.
  • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds (if using); let them splutter.
  • Add dried red chilies, chopped garlic, and asafoetida. Sauté until garlic turns golden brown.
  • Stir in Kashmiri red chili powder and immediately pour the tadka over the dal.
